Energy Event

Utilities work to produce enough energy for all of their customers.  When there is very high demand for electricity, utilities strive to balance power production by limiting usage to meet everyone's energy needs.

Common terms for an energy event include, "demand response," "community energy event," or "energy conservation event."   Energy service providers can require customers to reduce their electricity usage during a few hours of the day.  An event can have up to three (3) parts.

A.  Home Preparation
Your home may be pre-cooled up to two hours earlier in the day.  By cooling earlier, homes can store the cooler air slowing inside temperature increases.  Rising temperatures should not be as noticeable while you are home or when you return.

Pre-cooling provides comfort - not energy reduction or conservation.  If you are interested in limiting energy usage during the pre-cool period:
  1. Temporarily increase the pre-cooling target temperature by 1-2 degrees.  This will continue pre-cooling your home, but with less energy usage.
  2. Temporarily adjust the pre-cooling target temperature to your scheduled temperature or higher.  This will end pre-cooling.
Target temperature adjustments during Home Preparation do not affect the upcoming energy event.

B.  Event Activates
Your energy supplier will reduce a small amount of energy used by your home for a short time by increasing your target temperature.

C.  Event Ends
Your regular temperature schedule resumes.
